Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the cost of an appliance?
kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1000, cost = kWh × price. A 2000 W heater for 1 hour uses 2 kWh; at 0.17 per kWh that is 0.34.
Where do I find the power of a device?
On the type plate or charger, in the manual, or measured with a plug-in energy meter for devices whose consumption varies.
Why does a fridge cost less than its watts suggest?
Fridges and many devices cycle on and off. For them, enter the average power or use the yearly kWh from the energy label.
