How to read resistor color codes
- 1
Pick the band colors
Start with the band furthest from the gold or silver tolerance band.
- 2
Read the value
The value, tolerance and min–max range appear instantly, with a drawn resistor.
- 3
Or go backwards
Type a value such as 220 Ω or 4700 Ω to see its 4-band colors.
Why use this resistor color code calculator?
Both directions
Colors to value and value to colors, for 4-band and 5-band resistors.

Frequently asked questions
How do I read a 4-band resistor?
The first two bands are digits, the third is the multiplier and the fourth the tolerance. Yellow–violet–red–gold is 47 × 100 = 4.7 kΩ ±5 %.
What is the difference with 5 bands?
5-band resistors have three digit bands before the multiplier, for more precise values such as 1 % resistors.
Which side do I start reading from?
Start at the end opposite the tolerance band – gold and silver are always last.
